DISSERTATION BOOT CAMP for Grad Students - application deadline is March 15

Dissertation Boot Camp is a one-week intensive program (Monday, April 24 – Friday, April 28, 2017 from 8:45am - 4pm) designed to help graduate students accomplish their writing goals and accelerate their time to completion. The Council of Graduate Schools recommends dissertation boot camps because these programs have proven to help reduce attrition rates and assist in shortening time-to-degree.

==> Do you need time and space for writing your MA Thesis or PhD Dissertation? YES!
==> Do you wish you had extra writing support from experts? YES!

Participants are expected to attend everyday. This program will provide participants with:
* focused and supported individual time to write
* access to one-on-one support with writing experts
* morning mini-lessons on writing strategies and issues

Participants will practice productive writing habits and establish realistic writing goals in order to maintain timelines and build the necessary skills for the successful and timely completion of their academic studies.

3MT competitions coming to a College near you starting March 1

3MT® is a university wide competition for graduate students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex research in an engaging, accessible and compelling way, using only one slide.

College competitions start on March 1 with CPES. Check out the full College schedule here.

The top two competitors from each College will advance to the U of Guelph 3MT® Final Competition which will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m in UC442.

The winner of the UoG competition will advance to the Ontario Regional championship to be held at the University of Waterloo on April 12.

Nominations open for the SSHRC Talent Award

The Office of Grad and Postdoc Studies is pleased to announce the launch of the 2017 SSHRC Impact Awards competition. The annual SSHRC Impact Awards recognize the highest achievements in social sciences and humanities research, knowledge mobilization and scholarship supported by SSHRC.

The OGPS will now be accepting nominations for the Talent Award ($50,000), which recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual who, on April 30, 2017, holds a SSHRC doctoral or postdoctoral fellowship or scholarship (including, but not limited to, a Canada Graduate Scholarship, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship or Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship).

Talent Award Nominations are due to OGPS March 1, 2017. If you would like to nominate an individual for the Talent Award, please email the Graduate Awards Officers for details grschol@uoguelph.ca.

Writing an Effective Abstract: An Audience-Based Approach


In an article in Inside Higher Ed, Faye Halpern and James Phelan explain why it is important to write abstracts for your intended readers, but also for the reviewers of your paper.

Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies photo shoot

The OGPS is hosting a photo shoot to capture images representing graduate students at the University of Guelph. The images will be used for promotion and marketing of graduate studies for Fall 2017-2018 (i.e. viewbook, website, one pagers, etc.).

Graduate student volunteers are required at both the Master’s and Doctoral level to provide profiles and images. Interested grad students are asked to complete the Photo shoot participant webform, which requests students’ name, email address, program, preferred time slot, and 5 to 7 questions to create their profile. Specific information and location details will be provided to those who register. Students are asked to be available for the entire time slot.
The photo shoot will be held on March 16 at locations around campus.

Shoot 1: 09:00 to 10:15
Shoot 2: 10:30 to 11:45
Shoot 3: 12:00 to 13:30

MITACS online workshops this semester

Mitacs offers several online workshops each semester.
There are 4 starting this semester. They take from 1 to 6 hours to complete (depending on the topic) and are available from 4 to 8 weeks after they open.

The workshops are free for graduate students and postdoctoral associates.

Class of OAC '60 Award for Outstanding Teaching Assistant
Undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members are encouraged to make nominations at any time, accompanied by appropriate documentation (as detailed in nomination form).
* Nomination Forms should be submitted by March 1 to Office of Graduate Studies.
* Full-time graduate students may be nominated by undergraduate, graduate and faculty members for teaching duties completed in the previous calendar year (i.e. January to December).

Arthur D. Latornell Graduate Travel Grants
* Value: up to 40 awards varying amounts up to a total of $27,000 annually
* Established to honour Arthur D. Latornell, OAC '50, who had a life-long special interest in resource management and conservation and in helping young people. One of the ten awards is available to a student whose research interest relates to resource remediation/reclamation.
* Apply to department/school by March 1 for the winter competition using the Latornell Graduate Travel Grant Program Nomination form.

ICI Scholarship in Biotechnology
* An annual scholarship of $2,500, tenable with other Senate awards, may be awarded to an MSc or PhD student registered in a department or school at the University of Guelph who is doing research in biotechnology.
* The student must have a first-class ('A') average in the two years of university work (courses and/or research) completed prior to March 1 each application year: all previous university transcripts will be reviewed, as will an application reference letter from the previous/current advisor.
* Apply to the Office of Graduate Studies by March 1. The selection committee is the Office of Graduate Studies Awards Committee.

Cecil H. Franklin Graduate Scholarship in Soil and Water Conservation
* Full-time MSc or PhD students whose research is related to soil and/or water conservation.
* Apply to the Office of Graduate Studies by March 1 with the Cecil H. Franklin Graduate Scholarship in Soil and Water Conservation application.

Fred Thompson Scholarship
* Established in memory of David Frederick (Fred) Thompson, 1920-2005, who for 40 years was the Secretary of the Canadian Dairy and Food Industry Supply Association. Selection will be based on a combination of academic achievement and relevance of proposed research and its application in industry or the community.
* Canadian citizens or permanent residents entering or transferring to their first Masters program in May, September or January following the deadline date, and pursuing studies in a post farm gate related subject (any topic related to the food continuum, post farm gate; chemistry, microbiology, processing, engineering, functionality, nutrition, food safety and marketing).
* Apply to the Office of Graduate Studies Awards by March 1 with a description of no more than two pages of proposed research and its application in industry or the community and two academic references.


Stanley Saunders Scholarship for Music
* Matched by the University Graduate Scholarship Matching Program, a generous bequest from Dr. Richard Carlton, faculty member in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology from 1972 to December, 1990, provides a $6,000 scholarship for thesis graduate students whose research focus is furthering the fundamental understanding of the nature and function of music in human society.
* Selection is based on the quality of the proposal, the research findings of which are expected to be publishable in recognized humanities and/or social science journals. Preference will be given to research relating to the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods of music up to 1900.
* Apply to the Office of Graduate Studies by March 1 with an outline of the intended research, a curriculum vitae, and a detailed budget for the entire research project. Travel costs for a research project are an acceptable budget item.
